CHAPTER TWENTY FOUR

“Ready?” Superintendent Brian Lemon asked Harriet in the conference room. “They’ll be in soon. We’re expecting a good turnout this evening.”

Harriet took out her phone, switched it off and put it back into her pocket. She didn’t want any embarrassing interruptions. The door opened and an officer in uniform came in. It was PC Eric White. He glanced at Lemon, straightened his tie and sat between Harriet and the superintendent.

“What are you doing here?” Harriet asked him. “I thought you were off.”

“I thought you might want a bit of moral support. I had a few hours sleep and I feel wide awake. Thomas told me about the press conference. I’m surprised the DI agreed for you to do it.”

“Killian’s got more important things on his mind at the moment. Thanks for coming, Eric, I appreciate it.”

The door opened again and two PCs led the press contingent inside and showed them where to sit. Harriet watched as microphones were set up in front of her. She took a deep breath and scanned the room. There were at least thirty people staring at her. Superintendent Lemon leaned over to Harriet.

“I’ll lead off and then the floor’s yours. I must admit, I was surprised when Jack told me you volunteered to do this. I assume Tanya’s outlined the dos and don’ts?”

“She seems to know her job.”

“Right then. . .” Lemon moved closer to the microphones and looked at the crowd of people in front of him. “Thank you all for coming. Detective constable Harriet Taylor will be our spokesperson today. I’ll hand you over. Harriet. . .”

“Thank you, sir.” Harriet felt strangely relaxed under the circumstances. “And thank you all for coming. As you all know, there has been a number of unfortunate incidents over the past few days. Two people are dead and we have reason to believe there are suspicious circumstances surrounding their deaths. Please let me say what I have to say and I’ll be happy to answer any questions you may have at the end. On Thursday at around lunchtime a thirty-six-year-old woman was found dead in her garage. I’m not at liberty to discuss the cause of death at this stage but I can tell you that the Trotterdown Police Department are treating it as suspicious. “She paused and glanced at the members of the press. She had a captive audience.

“Then, yesterday evening, we received a call about a young boy who had gone over the edge of the cliff at Merryhead. The sea rescue helicopter was called out but, unfortunately, the boy was already dead when they got there. We later found evidence to suggest his death was no accident. The death of the boy and that of the woman are now under investigation and I assure you, we will be working around the clock to bring it to a swift conclusion. “Harriet realised this was not strictly true: Killian was out with his wife, Thomas White was at home and DS Duncan was AWOL.“OK,” she said.
